Follow the Blue Ice

The road from Anchorage bends along the salt arm of the sea, then turns into a valley walled in ice and stone. From the high country, a long trail of blue ice winds down through the Chugach and runs almost to our door. The lodge sits at the end of it, modest place for a magnificent country: hot coffee, warm food, a window onto a piece of Alaska that nineteenth-century travelers would have walked weeks to see. We are a waystation, nothing more. But on a road like this, that is a worthy thing to be.
